If you’re out walking around the city, you may have noticed that pet-friendly shops and restaurants are opening up. Our friends at WalletHub looked at the 100 largest cities in the U.S. and compared the “creature-friendliness” of each one.
1. Most Pet-Friendly Cities Overall
The city taking the “Best in Show” award is Orlando, Florida. Orlando ranked second in “pet health and wellness” and the city also has the most vets, most pet-friendly businesses and restaurants per capita. The other cities in the top five are Birmingham, AL (#2), Tampa, FL (#3), Lexington, KY (#4) and Scottsdale, AZ (#5).
2. Most Pet-Friendly Businesses
We’ve all heard of the big industry pet store names like Petco and PetSmart, but there are smaller, local businesses that are catering just to our pets; like doggy daycare, pet salons and pet stores. There was a five-way tie for the best city for pet businesses: Las Vegas, NV; Miami, FL; Cincinnati, OH; Orlando, FL and Scottsdale, AZ. The city with the least pet-friendly businesses is Newark, NJ.
3. Most Pet-Friendly Restaurants
Gone are the days where we bring home a “doggy bag” of leftovers for our pets. Now restaurants are allowing your fur babies to sit right with you at the table! Local restaurants set out water dishes for your pets and even have a dog menu they can order from. New Orleans, LA has the most pet-friendly restaurants in the United States. Yelpers rated Café Amelie the best restaurant for your pet. Other cities that embrace bringing your pet to lunch: San Francisco, CA (#2), Austin, TX (#3), Atlanta, GA (#4) and Orlando, FL (#5).
4. Most Dog Parks
Once your pooch chows down at their favorite restaurant, they’ll have to run it off at the park. San Francisco, CA is ranked as the top city for dog parks. Your dog will love running around Fort Funston Park which looks over the Pacific Ocean. You dog will love walking through the trails or splashing in the waves. Other cities that tied with San Francisco for first: Portland, OR; Las Vegas, NV; Tampa, FL; Henderson, NV and Madison, WI.
