Mary Poppins: 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Everyone’s Favorite Magical Nanny

Everyone’s favorite magical nanny, Mary Poppins, is back with “Mary Poppins Returns.” So, The List is giving you a spoonful of sugar and five things you don’t know about the original Mary Poppins. 

1. The Truth Behind the Film’s Beginning Scenes 

First, we’re taking a look at the flying nannies in the film’s beginning scenes. Turns out, some of the flying nannies were – mannies! They dressed stuntmen as nannies to fly in this scene.  

2. Who Had the Worst Fake English Accent?  

At number two, Dick Van Dyke is considered to have one of the worst fake English accents ever – and he agrees. He admitted so in an interview with Conan O’Brien. “It was the worst accent I’ve ever done,” he said, “but the guy who taught me was an Irishman!” 

3. Dick Van Dyke’s Pseudonym 

Next, speaking of Dick Van Dyke, did you know he used a pseudonym to play Mr. Dawes Sr.?  In the closing credits of the film, Dick Van Dyke was credited as Navckid Keyd. The letters then rearranged themselves to reveal his real name. 

4. Walt Disney’s Favorite Song is In the Film 

The fourth thing you might not know is that the movie gave Walt Disney one of his all-time favorite songs called “Feed the Birds.” Walt would put in regular requests to the composers, the Sherman Brothers. 

5. The “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” Controversy 

And finally, the “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” controversy. The writers of a 1949 song with a nearly identical title sued Disney for $12 million bucks. Disney won, and the word even made it into the Oxford English Dictionary. 

“Mary Poppins Returns” is in theaters now, and these are five things you may not know about Mary Poppins.
